Leading up to ASU’s bout with Illinois Saturday night, coach Todd Graham repeatedly mentioned how curious he was to see how his team handled adversity.

Turns out, he has to wait another week, as the Sun Devils (2-0) steamrolled Illinois (1-1) 45-14.

“I feel like this was a big test for us, going up against a Big Ten team, and a very strong one at that,” Graham said. “We went out and dominated them.”

The Sun Devils jumped on the Illini from the onset. ASU’s first drive, which covered 68 yards over eight plays, concluded when senior running back Cameron Marshall fumbled the ball on the one yard line. Although the Sun Devils failed to finish the drive, it was apparent the offense was in rhythm.

“(On) most of our plays, our coaching staff does a great job of scheming stuff, and our first option is usually there,” redshirt sophomore quarterback Taylor Kelly said.

Kelly and redshirt freshman quarterback Michael Eubank completed their first 16 combined pass attempts and led the offense into the red zone on each of its first five possessions, four of which ended in touchdowns.

“What our quarterbacks are doing right now is remarkable,” Graham said. “They’re checking and getting us into the right plays, the options, and the things they are doing are phenomenal. Those two are dynamic and they’re hard to stop.”

Kelly and Eubank finished the night with a combined 318 yards on 23-of-29 passing. Eubank threw two touchdown passes, both to junior tight end Chris Coyle, while Kelly threw the first one of the night to redshirt junior wide receiver Kevin Ozier.

“I think the reason why we are doing so well (offensively) is the coaches expect perfection out of us,” Coyle said. “They don’t accept anything less.”

The Sun Devils added 192 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Eubank, Marshall and freshman running back D.J. Foster all rushed for scores.

Defensively, ASU was just as impressive, as it held Illinois to seven of 17 on third down conversions and forced three turnovers.

Freshman linebacker Carlos Mendoza, who started in place of redshirt senior linebacker Brandon Magee (concussion), hauled in two second quarter interceptions. Mendoza left the game late in the first half after injuring his left shoulder, which he had surgery on in the offseason.

Mendoza did not return to the game and was wearing a sling on the sidelines during the second half, but Graham expects his linebacker to be okay and does not believe it is anything serious.

Graham constantly mentions the importance of discipline, not only on the football field, but also in all walks of life. The Sun Devils defense showed its commitment to discipline by going a second straight game without a single penalty.

“I love the way our guys are playing disciplined,” Graham said.

However, junior safety Alden Darby has the mentality of a playmaker and decided to freelance early in the third quarter, resulting in Illinois’ third turnover of the night.

“Only thing different about this interception compared to last week was last week I was supposed to read the quarterback and go to the ball,” Darby said. “This week I was in coverage and I had the tight end man to man and I looked at the quarterback and he’s looking away so I said ‘I’m going to go run over there.’ I saw the ball in there air and got it.”

The Sun Devils are off to an impressive 2-0 start, but next week they face their first road test, against SEC foe Missouri. Following Saturday’s win, Graham said handling success is very hard to do. His players though are buying in and remaining mentally focused.

“We have to come out to every game and come away with a victory every week and prepare throughout that week. We have to improve every week.”

The school year and college football season has arrived.

Parties, Saturday night games and nightlife will all start out as fun and games but will end in trouble for some.

A notable amount of collegiate football players were suspended for their first game of the season, including three ASU players.

Jamal Miles, a senior wide receiver for the program, was suspended for the first game of the season due to failure to meet team standards. Miles’ suspension was said to be for undisclosed reasons, dating back to last year when he was suspended for the Las Vegas Bowl.

Coach Todd Graham sent a message to the Sun Devil football program before they even took the field against NAU. A bold move by Graham to suspend three players did not interfere with the game though, as the Sun Devils cruised to a 63-6 victory.

Graham recently announced in this video that the three players would return to play in week two against Illinois. Graham also noted that, “the hardest thing to do is to get a football team up to play 14 games – and you’re only guaranteed 12.”

It may not have been the riskiest move since we had FCS opponent NAU for week one opponents, but Coach Graham showed his team that he means business.

Graham went on to say: “At the end of the day, I think our team looked and said, ‘Wow, coach is going to hold one of the best players on our team accountable (for)…’ I don’t want to say it’s not major, but probably somewhere else it wouldn’t be anything. I think that shows our players (that) our standard is different.”

On other campuses across the nation, many other players have been cited week one suspensions by their teams, due to personal reason or team conduct policy.

The University of Michigan’s running back, Fitz Toussaint, was suspended for his team’s first game against the University of Alabama. Toussaint pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle while visually impaired, a reduced charge of his drunk driving arrest in July.

Michigan did not play a FCS opponent, however they did play arguably the most mature and best team in the country.

Alabama went on to win 41-14, and the eighth ranked Michigan team fell to the 19th rank in the AP polls.

Mistakes will cost you.

It just so happened that in Jamal Miles’ case, ASU was playing FCS team NAU. This is while Fitz Toussaint’s Wolverines had to open the season with second ranked Alabama. The mistakes were then put on two different tiers.

Of course Toussaint’s arrest was news that no one wanted to hear. Whatever Jamal Miles got suspended for, hopefully he is working to get back to the form he was last year. However, the fact of the matter is that timely mistakes cause missed opportunities, and Jamal Miles sure doesn’t want to miss out anymore.

Nail art seems to be all of the rage right now. We owe it all to WAH-Nails, a salon on the lower east side of London.

Starting in 2005 as a magazine about ladies that were contributing to the style and music of hip-hop, they were also dedicated to providing a space for a new wave of street smart feminism. The 2008 founder, Sharmadean Reid, decided to take the nail art she and her friends were supporting to the mainstream. On August 1st 2009 WAH nails opened up their London salon, not only a space for nail art but also held record launch parties, art shows, film nights, and a community for street smart feminists. They were named one of the “15 people who will definite the future of arts in Britain” and part of the “New Generation” in Vogue magazine.

There are many ways you can give yourself “WAH” nails without taking a trip to London. Here are some tools, tips, and tricks to get yourself started.

Here is what you’ll need:

Designs and patterns are essential to nail artwork. Photo courtesy of WAH.

-Nail Polish
-Nail Polish remover
-Cotton Balls
-Tape
-Pencil with an eraser
-Pin/Needle/Small screw
-Q-tip
-Sponge

Different designs you can do yourself. Photo courtesy of WAH.

Some of the materials needed to glamorize your nails. Photo courtesy of WAH.

Trick # 1: Ombre effect
Start by picking out two different colors of nail polish. Paint your nail half one color, and half the other.
Take a Q-tip and gently rub it in the middle of where the two colors meet.
Now take your sponge and lightly dab starting at the top moving down until the color begins to weaken.
And there you have it- Ombre nails!

Ombre nails. Photo courtesy of WAH.

Trick # 2: Tape to make perfect shapes and lines
Use tape to block out certain parts of the nail to create a design neatly.
You can also cut shape out of the tape to place on the nail and paint over for a cool effect.
Just remember to wait for the nail polish to dry before removing the tape!

Trick # 3: Make your own nail art brush
Grab your pencil and needle (you can also use a small screw or pin).
Push the sharp end of your needle into the eraser until it is sturdy and stuck.
Poor some nail polish out onto a plastic surface you can throw away.
Use the end of the needle and dip into polish to create polka dots, patterns, and designs.

Trick #4: Get creative
Look for patterns and inspiration on anything and everything.

Dr. Ileana Alexandra Orlich, director of ASU’s Romanian Studies program, is no stranger to excellence.

Walking into her office, it is clear that Dr. Orlich is an accomplished person. Her shelves are close to bursting with her work and her desk practically groans under the weight of multiple awards, honors and various tokens of appreciation.

With her smooth, yet passionate manner of speaking, it is hardly surprising that the Romanian program has flourished with her as its charismatic leader.

Upon first glance, she immediately identifies my German and Central European heritage before saying anything else. She then launches into a detailed history of the Romanian language and culture.

Clearly Orlich is an expert.

Since founding the Romanian program at ASU in 1998, Orlich’s accomplishments and honors have continued to stack up, not the least of which include her recent appointment as one of ASU’s newest President’s Professors.

Each year, three professors who exemplify teaching excellence and student engagement and also succeed in their research ventures receive the President’s Professor award. While any professor at ASU is eligible to be nominated, past winners have often been science or mathematics professors. Orlich is the first language professor to receive the award.

Despite this lofty honor, however, Orlich remains humble. “The Romanian program is privileged to be a part of ASU, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the School of International Letters and Cultures,” she says.

Along with lecturer Julieta Paulesc, Orlich has built ASU’s Romanian program into the largest of its kind in the United States. The language, which bears resemblance to Spanish, French, and Italian, has a surprisingly robust student enrollment at ASU even though Romanian is not commonly spoken.

Drawing heavy student participation and enjoying international recognition, the program (which also includes the ASU Central and Eastern European Cultural Collaborative within the Department of English) hosts European artists, writers, actors and playwrights, as well as a yearly lecturer from Romania who teaches several courses at ASU. The latter is sent and funded by the Romanian government, a fact that illustrates the renown of ASU’s program.

In 2010, Orlich was appointed Honorary Consul General of Romania for Arizona by the Romanian government as a result of her dedication to teaching the country’s language and culture. In this role, she maintains a strong relationship with the Romanian community in Arizona.

Some may recognize the title as the same which was bestowed upon Olympic gold-medal gymnast Nadia Comăneci in Oklahoma in 2003.

Orlich plays a vital role in the School of International Letters and Cultures, and though Romanian is a “minor” language, Dr. Robert Cutter, director of the School of International Letters and Cultures (SILC), says she is an excellent representative of the school.

Cutter says, “The reason SILC was founded was to promote…trans-disciplinary connections, and she does that very well.” In addition to several upper-division Romanian courses, Orlich also teaches European culture courses in SILC and the Department of English that are noted for challenging cultural and disciplinary boundaries.

Though head of the German, Romanian, and Slavic Language faculty at ASU, Orlich’s area of study and research is comparative literature, and this focus is reflected in her many published works.

A sample of Orlich’s works.

Orlich has translated multiple books (some of which she received Romania’s premier translation prize) and has authored many works herself on a plethora of subjects, ranging from Eastern European theater to linguistics.

The sheer volume of her published work is clear as she lists and stacks each book on the desk in front of her, forming a veritable tower of rich, cultural literature.

Along with the Romanian program, Orlich created ASU’s Summer program to Central Europe and Romania. Many students take part in this transdisciplinary program, both Romanian students and otherwise.

Perhaps the best indicator of the study-abroad program’s quality is the fact that non-ASU students regularly participate. Orlich says that students from institutions such as the University of Washington and the University of California at Berkeley have experienced the four-week journey, and some have done so multiple times.

The popularity of both the Romanian program and the Central European Summer program are in large part due to Orlich’s dedication to the success of students. “Students seem to flock to her once they encounter her,” says Cutter.

Current graduate student Erin Goodner, a four-time participant in the Central European program and dual-enrolled student at ASU and Babes-Bolyai University in Romania, says, “Dr. Orlich has become a mentor. She’ll move mountains for her students.”

She adds, “[Dr. Orlich] is one of the most energetic and passionate teachers I have seen.” Goodner, who went on the Central European program “on a whim” says she fell in love with Romania and its culture as a result of Orlich’s enthusiasm.

This enthusiasm is unmistakable when speaking with Orlich, whose voice is rife with excitement as she describes the rolling hills and vast forests of Romania’s countryside.

It is difficult to overstate Orlich’s contributions to SILC and ASU as a whole. Through her work, she has made Romanian a major presence at ASU and has impassioned her students with her knowledge. Yet she stresses that her achievements would not have been possible without support from others.

“Every single moment of this program has been the result of teamwork, administrative support, leadership and collaborative effort.”

Going to the bookstore (or Amazon, Chegg, etc.) certainly puts a strain on the wallet as each semester’s classes begin. ASU professors and staff have realized this problem, and with the utilization of new technology they tried to counteract the problem with the solution of the electronic textbook.

So, was it a smart move?

Transferring to digital books can save students anywhere from $5 to $100 per book, and since the recent surge of mobile technology, many publishers and ASU staff members are leaning towards electronic textbooks as an option (or the only option) for students.

While the pricing is a huge incentive for students to make the switch, it still may not be the best option for everyone.

Julea Shaw, a sophomore biology student, has some mixed feelings about the digital side of textbooks. The price difference of $65 was the main draw for Shaw in buying her Genetics textbook online, but after two weeks of classes, she has some complaints.

One problem she ran into was the interface: it was hard to control and jumpy.

“I prefer normal textbooks because I think it’s harder to read (digital textbooks) on the computer because of the screen’s backlight,” says Shaw.

Hard copies or digital copies — which one will you choose? Photo by Courtland Jeffrey.

Reading on the screen may strain her eyes, but overall she feels like she made the right decision by getting the digital textbook. For her, the price difference outweighs the issues that are involved.

Personally, reading off of a screen is fine and since my smartphone, tablet or computer is always nearby, having the book available without having to carry the extra weight is great. With the added price difference, my choice of buying as many of my books digitally was a simple one to make.

The next time you look into buying textbooks and have the option between a physical or a digital textbook, weigh all of the options and choose whether you would prefer a book in your hand or a few extra bucks in your wallet.
